1 Ramadan 1443 AH -April 3 2022 Issue # 14, Newsletter #1961

Editorial

 Dr Kaukab Siddique

The first day of Ramadan was April 3, a Sunday.

Unfortunately many Muslims disregard the clear teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, about Ramadan although there can be no Islam without the teachings of the Prophet, pbuh:

Many Muslims have handed over their faith to experts and specialists and mullahs.

Most people want someone to tell them although Islam is meant for every Muslims.

Is it a surprise that Muslims are are by and large ruled by dictators and kings or are waiting for the emergence of a Mahdi or even the descent of Jesus, pbuh.

كتاب الصيام13 The Book of Fasting (5)Chapter: Each land has its own sighting of the moon, and if they see the crescent in one land, that does not necessarily apply to regions that are far away from it

Kuraib reported that Umm Fadl, daughter of Harith, sent him (Fadl, i.e. her son) to Mu'awiya in Syria. I (Fadl) arrived in Syria, and did the needful for her. It was there in Syria that the month of Ramadan commenced. I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday. I then came back to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah b. 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) asked me (about the new moon of Ramadan) and said:

When did you see it? I said: We saw it on the night of Friday. He said: (Did) you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw it and they fasted and Mu'awiya also fasted, whereupon he said: But we saw it on Saturday night. So we will continue to fast till we complete thirty (fasts) or we see it (the new moon of Shawwal). I said: Is the sighting of the moon by Mu'awiya not valid for you? He said: No; this is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has commanded us. Yahya b. Yahya was in doubt (whether the word used in the narration by Kuraib) was Naktafi or Taktafi.

Two Amazing Black Women Ripped up Ketanji Brown Jackson female candidate for Supreme Court.

They call themselves Diamond & Silk and appeared on Newsmax for an hour.

At first one might think they are from the ghetto.

They are eloquent and scholarly and they tore apart the candidacy of Jackson.

Here are the main points they made:

  1. Jackson is soft on crimes against children.
  2. She is so deeply mired in the "liberal" transgender culture that she could not explain what is a woman.
  3. What is transgender and lgbtq?
  4. The police unions are supporting Jackson. Why?
  5. The role of Biden.
  6. It is unwise to think that all Black people support Biden.

Native American tribe gets its land back after being displaced nearly 400 years ago

The Rappahannock Tribe, a Native Tribe in Virginia, has reacquired 465 acres of sacred land at Fones Cliff.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and US Fish and Wildlife Service Director Martha Williams celebrated the tribe's reacquisiton of the land Friday, according to a press release from the Department of the Interior.

"We have worked for many years to restore this sacred place to the Tribe," said Rappahannock Tribe Chief Anne Richardson, according to the Chesapeake Conservancy. "With eagles being prayer messengers, this area where they gather has always been a place of natural, cultural and spiritual importance."

"The Department is honored to join the Rappahannock Tribe in co-stewardship of this portion of their ancestral homeland. We look forward to drawing upon Tribal expertise and Indigenous knowledge in helping manage the area's wildlife and habitat," Secretary Haaland said in the statement. "This historic reacquisition underscores how Tribes, private landowners, and other stakeholders all play a central role in this Administration's work to ensure our conservation efforts are locally led and support communities' health and well-being."

The cliffs play a central part in the history of the tribe. In 1608, the tribe first encountered and defended their homeland against English settler Captain John Smith, who played an important role in the first permanent English settlement in America at Jamestown, Virginia. In the 1660s, the tribe began to be forcefully displaced from their homeland on the Rappahannock River by the English, according to the Chesapeake Conservancy.

The tribe's reacquisition of its land was made possible by the family of William Dodge Angle, who provided the funds necessary for the Chesapeake Conservancy to purchase the 465 acres and donate the fee title to the Rappahannock Tribe. Additional funding also came from a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through Walmart's Acres for America Program, according to the conservancy.

The acquisition follows a growing movement of Indigenous people fighting to reclaim their land.

In 2019, the Wiyot tribe successfully reclaimed their ancestral homeland of Duluwat Island on the northern coast of California after over a century of displacement. And earlier this year, more than 500 acres of California forests were returned to a group of Native American tribes.

A Blogger's Post

 Blog Post

The writer, Ken Meyercord, publishes his blog, "Ken's Blog", which he describes as " Iconoclastic views on controversial topics."

The Hilarious Holocaust
by Ken Meyercord
Depressed by the at-least-once-a-week article in The Washington Post linking the ongoing tragedy in the Ukraine to the Holocaust, I've tried to lift my spirit by looking on the lighter side of that earlier horror (Believe it or not, there is a lighter side!); for instance:

The Fake Gas Chamber at Dachau : At the Dachau concentration camp in Germany is a room with a low, 7-foot ceiling in which fake, sheet metal showerheads are embedded. Tourists are informed that the room was a gas chamber. Problem is two days after Dachau's liberation a congressional delegation visited Dachau and they described the room as having a 10-foot-high ceiling from which real, brass showerheads hung. The congressmen were so preconditioned to expect to find a gas chamber they speculated on how the poison gas was introduce into the room through the plumbing, instead of recognizing the room for what it was: a shower room.
 Fake Gas Chamber at Dachau

While identifying the room as a gas chamber, tour guides explain that it was never used; but this is disputed by a man who claimed to have been an inmate at Dachau, Martin Zaidenstadt, who pedaled his memoir in which he describes witnessing gassings to gullible tourists outside the main gate of the camp for years.

The Barber of Treblinka : As with most who claim to be eyewitnesses to gassings, it's hard to tell whether Zaidenstadt is lying or just delusional. Take Abraham Bomba, a barber who says he and other barbers gave a "nice haircut" to women inmates at Treblinka—in the very chamber in which the women were soon to be gassed. Some of the women were relatives of the barbers, yet they gave their kin no inkling of what awaited them. You might think I'm setting up a straw man easily ridiculed, but Bomba is featured on the website of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum!

Gassing Vans : At one time the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance featured a short, documentary-like film which showed children being herded into the back of a van by grim-faced Nazis, who attached a hose from the truck's exhaust to the inside of the enclosed van to asphyxiate the poor kids. A revisionist named David Cole knew the scene was fake and, after diligent research, found the obscure, fictional Polish movie from which the footage had been kyped. He informed the film's producer about the museum airing the scene non-stop and expressed his hope the producer was receiving royalties. He wasn't. One can only imagine the lively conversation between the irate producer and Mr. Wiesenthal which ensued! (Gassing vans figure prominently in the Holocaust tale, but an actual such van has never been found.)

Bogus Autobiographies: Holocaust autobiographies are ever popular (Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban once quipped, "There's no business like Shoah business" [Shoah being another term for the Holocaust]). Many of the books which made the best-seller list under the Nonfiction category, however, subsequently had to be reclassified as Fiction. Here are a few: The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosiński, a book lauded by that Hypester of Holocaust Horrors, Elie Wiesel, in which Kosiński, who would go on to become a two-time president of PEN America, claims that, as a boy, he spent the war years wandering Europe alone and frightened, while, in fact, he was sheltered by a Catholic family in Switzerland throughout the war; Misha by Misha Defonseca, the Romanesque fable of a little girl who fled into the woods to escape the Nazis and was raised by wolves, a book which was translated into 18 languages and made into a movie before Defonseca was exposed as a fraud; Angel at the Fence by Herman Rosenblat, a concentration camp romance hailed by Oprah Winfrey as "the single greatest love story" ever told on her TV show; subsequently, when confronted about impossibilities in his account, the author recanted.

March of the Living Dead : A group called 'March of the Living', which takes young Jews on tours of the concentration camps, scaring the bejeezus out of them and instilling in them a hatred of Gentiles and a thirst for revenge, used this photo of smoldering bodies being cremated in the street in its promotional materials:
 March of the Living Dead

Apparently, they assumed any World War II-era pile of corpses must be Jews. In fact, those are German dead, killed in the Allies' firebombing of Dresden. A cautionary tale when it comes to understanding just what such gruesome photos portray; for instance, this photo:
 March of the Living Dead

At first glance this might be taken to be a photo of a mass grave with Germans admiring their handiwork. It is a mass grave—of Poles in the Katyn Forest—but they were killed by the Soviets when they invaded Poland in 1940, not the Germans (after decades of claiming the Germans were responsible, the Russians admitted they did it after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990).

Holocaust Denial Laws : Some 17 countries in Europe have made it a crime to deny or trivialize the official Holocaust narrative, and those who violate the law face serious prison time. David Cole, the gassing van debunker, quips, "The present rulers of Germany want to prove they're not the kind of Germans who lock people up for writing books—by locking people up for writing books." And, harking back to the 1930s, do you know what the German government does with banned books it confiscates: it burns them.

The Silence of the Memoirists : When Winston Churchill was told during the war that the Germans had exterminated a million and a half Jews, he called it "the greatest and most horrible crime ever committed in the whole history of the world", if true ( Winston S. Churchill, Vol VII, by Martin Gilbert, p. 847); yet, in his memoir of the war years, Churchill makes no mention of the Holocaust. Did the "the greatest and most horrible crime ever committed " slip his mind, even when the final count had quadrupled to 6 million, or did he know the story was bunk and did not want to be seen by future generations as a fool for having fallen for wartime propaganda? (Nor did Eisenhower or de Gaulle mention the Holocaust in their memoirs).

If you believe it crass of me to find humor in something as horrific as the Holocaust, blame those who have defiled the memory of those who perished by distorting the story with such bizarre, fanciful embellishments as to lend to a true tragedy a sometimes comical aspect.

The cultural and ideological imperialism and the civilizational war
Dr. Firoz Mahboob Kamal
www.drfirozmahboobkamal.com/blog/the-cultural-and-ideologica-imperialism-and-the-civilizational-war/
The infrastructure of continual occupation
In the Muslim world, the west's military occupation has formally ended. But the cultural and ideological occupation still thrives. In former colonies, imperialists' Armies may not be visible in uniforms. But their soldiers -both the natives and the westerners are still present in thousands to promote their ideas, culture, values, education, politics, and commerce. They work in both civil and military establishments of the former colonies. Therefore, even after the formal departure of the imperialists, their way of thinking, living, eating, drinking, dressing, and politics didn't die out, rather flourished. In such a conducive cultural and ideological milieu, the westerners enjoy a huge advantage in Muslim lands. As fish freely swim in the water, they too, freely roam in these former colonies.
Such cultural and ideological occupation has proved to be very cost-effective for the imperialists. It has reduced the cost of further military occupation. This is why to perpetuate the occupation, it has been the strategic objective of the colonialists to build obedient cultural and ideological armies as well as culture-friendly civil and military infrastructure long before their formal departure from the colonies. What the British and the French did in their former colonies, the US tries to do the same in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and many other Muslim countries. Because of ideological and cultural compatibility, in those Muslim lands the westerners are not considered alien, rather taken as sociable friends. Whereas in the same Muslim countries, due to heavy intoxication with the Western ideologies and culture, the Islamists with the prophetic format of beliefs that entails Islamic khilafah, sharia, hudud, jihad, and trans-ethnic pan-Islamic Muslim unity are looked down as incompatible strangers. Therefore, the practitioners of the untainted Qur'anic Islam face tremendous disadvantages and state-sponsored enmity in their own homelands. In many countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and many others, the Islamists find their places in prisons. They are labelled as terrorists -an easy pretext for bloody persecution and killing.

The cultural cum ideological occupation never comes alone. It also brings cultural cum ideological conversion and prepares the ground for long-term political, ideological, cultural, and economic slavery. The religious conversion makes the prophets and the heroes of that embraced religion highly respectable to the new converts. This is why the Middle Eastern Jesus got acceptance as a god among western Christian converts. Likewise, with the cultural conversion, the heroes and the icons of the imperialists became the political and cultural prophets of the converts. As a result of iconoclastic endeavours of the occupying powers, even in Muslim lands, the great Muslim heroes finds their place only in rare history books or graveyards. These Muslim heroes are not even mentioned in the text books, let alone teaching their thoughts. Not only the western thoughts and beliefs, but also their cultural products like their dress, stories, history, sports, cinemas, cartoon films, dolls, and toys get huge market in the occupied Muslim lands. To make the situation much worse, the greatest catastrophic fall-out of the cultural and ideological occupation hits somewhere else. AIDS damages humans' immunity against germs. Likewise, the ideological and cultural occupation of the enemies kills the ideological immunity of the Muslims against anti-Islamic ideas. This is why de-Islamisation cum aloofness from Islamic vision and ideology could go much deeper among the Muslims. Such enemy occupation not only destroys the power of resistance against foreign aggression but also inspires the ideological and cultural converts to welcome them. Hence, the US army found welcoming friends in Kabul in 2001 and Baghdad in 2003. And in Pakistan, the government of President General Parvaiz Musharraf opened the land and air space for the US to bomb Afghanistan in 2001. In Bangladesh, many people are ready to welcome the Indian Army in Dhaka. In Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar, and in many other Muslim countries, the same ideological and cultural converts gave sanctity to the US Army in their midst and beg their constant presence. Under such occupation, the whole country works as a cultural cum ideological industry. And the people appear as cultural and ideological products.

The US and her allies want to preserve the occupation at any cost. The US has built about 800 military bases all over the world to give sustenance to their worldwide military dominance and economic exploitation. This way the US wants to protect its superpower legacy. The imperialists call it a new world order. The creation of Israel, the division of the Middle East into 22 pieces, the occupation of the resource-rich Arab lands, the installation of the US and the NATO forces in the heart lands of the Muslim World are indeed the key elements of the so-called world order. It is indeed the imperialist world order to give sustenance to their own interest. Such a defensive and offensive military infrastructure are crucial for the exploitation of oil, gas, metals and other geopolitical and economic potentials of Muslims. It is also vital to keep the Muslim World under the continuous subjugation.

To give sustenance to such an exploitative western occupation and to grant legality to all of their military aggressions that are needed to meet their geopolitical interests, the leading colonial countries of the past formed a formal statutory body called the UN keeping the full control in their own hands. To keep the majority member states of the UN deprived of any influence in the decision-making, democracy has been officially banned in this world body. The UN itself has been made hostage in the hands of five big nuclear powers. As a result, the US stands dispossessed of the moral power to condemn even the most horrendous crimes on earth! So the brutal occupation of Palestine, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya and the destruction of hundreds of cities, massacre of millions in those countries by the occupiers went unabated and unpunished, let alone stop it. Not a single man was brought to justice for killing more than two million in the occupied countries. Such crimes of the big powers were not only overlooked, but also given official legality -as was the case of the US occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. In May 2021, the UN even failed to condemn the wholesale destruction of Gaza by the Israeli Army.

The cultural empire

The west's colonial empire has collapsed. But its cultural empire has thrived. It is due to its soft power. Unlike geopolitical frontiers, its cultural and ideological frontiers do not end at national borders. The western countries have taken it into the heartlands of most of the non-western countries. The Muslim countries are the most culturally and ideologically invaded territory. In fact, the concept of the global village and global culture was invented only to justify such a borderless cultural empire of the imperialists. The US and its NATO alliance want to give sustenance to such an empire at any cost. Former US President Barack Obama's war of ideas in fact revealed such a determination. The western imperialists understand that the major challenge to their dominance will not come from any military power, rather from an ideological cum cultural power. After the demise of the Soviet Union and its communism, it is the most dominant view in the academic as well as in the defence circles of the west that such a challenge will come only from Islam. China or India may emerge as big economic or military power, but have little to offer ideologically or culturally. Apart from some songs, folklores, dance shows, sitar music, and film entertainment, what cultural challenge India can present against the west? Do they have any ideological force that can galvanize people towards establishing any superior social order? They have their own huge ideological voids. To fill in those voids, the Indians and the Chinese are moving fast towards western economic, cultural, and political paradigms. The defeat of the Soviet Socialist Union in Afghanistan and its collapse in the immediate aftermath in fact owes to its disgraceful defeat in the direct clush with the ideological and cultural force of Islam. Islam offers the same challenge to the capitalists. And the west didn't miss the message. So the west's civilizational clush with Islam has already been started.

During the Soviet era, NATO's cold war was mostly against the USSR-lead communist bloc. Now it is mostly against Islam and the Islamists. The other nations of the world may have some political or economic conflicts of interest with the west, but they have no ideological or cultural quarrel. Hence, a Chinese, an Indian, a Russian, or a Japanese can easily meltdown in the socio-cultural melting pot of western societies. Their religions or ideologies do not stand as a barrier. Apart from some spiritual rituals, these religions do not delineate any formidable codes of conduct for their economic, cultural, judicial, or political practices. Hence they can take any diversions in those areas. They can share any food, drink or dress with the westerners.

Since Islam is a complete code of life, it does not give such a free option. A Muslim has to comply with the Islamic prescription in every aspect of life. Hence, unlike followers of other faiths, the Muslims stand distinctly different in a non-Muslim country. They appear in every field of life -even in streets, schools, colleges and workstations with the visible markers of religious, cultural, ideological, and political identity. But such distinctive visibility of millions of Muslims in Europe and America has not been positively appreciated in the west. Instead, such peaceful presence of the Muslims has turned them markedly Islamophobic and unwelcoming. Even a head scraf of a Muslim girl looks toxic to them. To them, London appears as "Londonistan" and England as a "de fact Muslim country" -as mentioned repeatedly in the British press. For the same reason, in India, Muslims face regular riots of annihilation at the hands of Hindutva forces. These are the symptoms of the ongoing cultural war.

The cultural imperialists of the west can't perceive and expect that any of the non-western ideas, cultures, or values should challenge their own idea, culture, and values. They perceive it as an attack on their pride and cultural heritage. They think, whatever they possess in the field of ideas, culture and values are unbeatable. Such a self-worshipping belief is indeed the basis of the western arrogance that has led them to genocide and ethnic cleansing in America, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries. This is why they envisage that the global village must have a singular brand of culture, ideas, and values, and that must be the western one. The US and its NATO alliance built huge armies not only to protect their political and economic interests but also to protect their cultural and ideological interests. Hence, they drop bombs not only on arms depots and war fields but also on madrasas, academic institutions, and houses. They kill not only the armed jihadists but also the unarmed scholars. They confiscate books and close the internet sites. The western powers are ready to tolerate the practice of Islam only within the confines of mosques or prayer mats, but not in political, judicial, cultural, and educational premises. Now they claim that the Islamic penal code, the law of inheritance, gender segregation, and even dress code go against basic human rights, hence suggest inviting the UN watchdogs into such premises to interfere.

The western colonial power also tried to alter the demographic specifics of the Muslim lands. They did it to serve their own strategic interest and to weaken the Muslims. They implanted millions of Jews in Palestine and many millions of Chinese in Malaysia. Thus they sowed the seed of continuous instability in the Muslim heartlands. But the colonization of Muslims' minds and intellect with western ideas was much more massive and worse. In fact, with the recent resurgence of Islam, such a project has received more importance. The Islamophobic propaganda and slander against Islam and its Prophet (peace be upon him) have attained a new hype. They now keep close monitoring of the educational systems, school textbooks, and academic curriculum of almost every Muslim country. They have already forced many countries to restrict the teachings of the Holy Qur'an in schools and colleges. The US ambassadors in countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan have started visiting religious madrasas. In Bangladesh, the books on Jihad are now being confiscated by the police. The mosques and religious institutions are also brought under close surveillance. Imams in mosques can't exercise their freedom in delivering Friday sermons. They are allowed only to read the printed stuff that is supplied to them by the government officials. However, the imperialists do not need to do such surveillance on their own in any Muslim country. In almost every Muslim country, they have enough foot soldiers and watchdogs to do the job. They are only giving the necessary orders, the native cultural and ideological converts are doing the rest.

Why is Sighting the Crescent Empowering for the Muslims?
It is obligatory to witness the New Moon for establishing certain acts of worship... if these acts are obligatory, such as Fasting 'Ramadan' & 'Hajj'.
Then witnessing the New Moon also becomes obligatory on the Muslim 'Ummah' { 'Fard Kifayah'.}
That is because..."what is necessary to fulfill the requirements of an obligation is an obligation itself."
The 'Sunnah' 'Dua' upon seeing the New Moon.
The Prophet (SallAllahu `Alayhi Wasallam) taught us the 'Dua' to read when we see the new moon.
So make an effort to sight the 'Ramadan' Moon with full attention and eagerness and say this
'Dua' on sighting the new moon! {In Shaa Allah}

Allaahu `Akbar, Allaahumma `ahillahu `alayna bil`amni wal`eemaani, wassalaamati wal-`Islaami, wattawfeeqi limaa tuhibbu Rabbanaa wa tardhaa, Rabbunaa wa Rabbukallaahu.
Translation:
Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, let the crescent loom above us in safety, faith, peace, and Islam, and in agreement with all that You love and pleases You. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah."
A Neglected 'Sunnah' ?
It's part of the beauty of Islam to anticipate when Fasting begin.
When will 'Eid' be ?
This builds up the excitement and love of these blessed times.
And there is deepest wisdom in how Allah {Subhaanahu waTaala} ordained these issues.
This was the way of the Prophet (SallAllahu`Alayhi Wasallam), the 'Sahabah' and Early generations,(including the 4 Imams), Yet, it is sad to see many Muslims getting lost in the fast track world of machines and calculations and neglecting this act of 'Sunnah' ! thus losing out on the chance to earn reward from their Rabb for following the Prophet (SallAllahu `Alayhi Wasallam) and his guidance!

PLEASE REVIVE THE 'SUNNAH' !
So work hard to revive the 'Sunnah' of the Prophet (SallAllahu
`Alayhi Wasallam) and Please don't belittle it.
Practice it yourself, teach it to your children and others.
Reviving aspects of the 'Sunnah' that are being forgotten is one of the most important charitable deeds that a person can do during his lifetime and is a deed that will bring an immense reward{!}

PROPHET (SallAllahu `Alayhi Wasallam) said..
'Whoever revives an aspect of my 'Sunnah' that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.'
(Source: Tirmidhi)

PROPHET (SallAllahu `Alayhi Wasallam) also said...
'Pay attention to my 'Sunnah' and the way of the Rightly guided 'Khalifahs' after me, adhere to it and hold fast to it.'

"And he who brings the Truth and he who confirms and supports it, such are the men who do right. They shall have all that they wish for, with their Rabb.
Such is the reward of those who do good: so that Allah will remit from them (even) the worst of their deeds and give them their reward according to the best of what they have done."

Islamic State Affiliates killed 11
Israelis including 2 from Ukraine

DPA report
In the third incident of its kind within a week, a man opened fire on passers-by on one street in the city of Bnei Brak near Tel Aviv, before moving on to another. The assailant was subsequently shot by police.

According to Israeli media reports, the perpetrator was a Palestinian from the occupied West Bank. The mayor of Bnei Brak called on residents to remain indoors.

Numerous ambulances and police officers attended the scene of the attack. A ZAKA ambulance worker who lived in the immediate vicinity told dpa that the sight at the scene had been "shocking."

"I saw four dead people on the street," he said, adding that he had treated a man with gunshot wounds.

Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted on Tuesday that it was "a sad and difficult evening," and that Israel was "at the height of a dangerous wave of terror, the likes of which we have not seen in years." He called for decisive action "to bring peace and security back to the citizens of Israel."

The shooting brings the number of Israelis killed in attacks within a week to at least 11.

On Sunday, two police officers and two gunmen were killed in an attack in the coastal city of Hadera, while four people were also killed in a terrorist bombing in the city of Beersheva in southern Israel last week. The bomber, a Bedouin from the Negev desert, was shot dead by a passer-by.

Attacks by Palestinians in the West Bank and the Arab-dominated eastern part of Jerusalem have increased in recent months. Several Palestinians have also been killed in Israeli raids.

There are fears of a further escalation during Ramadan.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was due to hold security talks with Defence Minister Benny Gantz and representatives of the country's military and police on Tuesday evening.

 Uyghurs

China's anti-Muslim Horrors

How did a revolutionary state which came to power promising to end all forms of national discrimination, end up resorting to such horrific policies?"

The answer to this question, posed by scholar of the Uyghurs David Brophy, has exercised world leaders and experts as they grapple with the whys and wherefores of China's onslaught against the Turkic peoples of its Northwestern borderlands, particularly since an acceleration of the atrocities against Xinjiang's so-called minorities in 2016.

Michael Clarke in his new anthology "The Xinjiang Emergency: Exploring the Causes and Consequences of China's Mass Detention of Uyghurs" (Manchester University Press, 2022) wrestling with the issues involved, considers the writing has been on the wall for decades, profoundly shaped by a colonialist mindset that laid the foundations for cultural genocide to solve a "Xinjiang problem" that had been vexing China's rulers for years.

September 2019 dawned as the full extent of the atrocities being meted out on the Turkic peoples of Northwest China was coming into focus. A multi-disciplinary band of experts gathered in the Australian city of Canberra, to piece together the available evidence so far. Something was happening in this desert land but a revelation of the full horrors was yet to be unleashed.

The genocide word and its relation to these crimes was being tentatively framed in terms of culture rather than of an entire ethnic group, but suspicions lurked in the shadows of something worse to come.

The pieces of the puzzle available to date were laid on the table by some of the best minds in the field, and Michael Clarke's "The Xinjiang Emergency" is the result.

There have been other conferences, panels, endless webinars and Zoom meets since. Analysis has moved on, satellite imagery has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that vast numbers have been incarcerated in hundreds of secret camps, the Chinese government's meticulous online records have betrayed their genocidal endgame, and sickening firsthand testimonies of camp survivors have trickled out.

Genocide is now firmly on the table.

But in 2019, with red flags flying metaphorically and physically, this group of academics sat down in the Australian National University (ANU) to thrash out the genesis of what has been described as the largest mass incarceration and persecution of an ethnic group since the Nazi Holocaust.

As the first team of analysts to specifically confront the warning signs, their observations provide valuable background and rare insights into a genocide that continues to unfold to this day.

Experts on the whole agree that since imperial times, the Chinese state has had its eye on controlling and assimilating both the territory and the non-Han peoples of the great Northwest.

Whilst, since the terror attacks of 9/11, draconian measures to rein in the Muslim "minorities" have been conveniently framed as "counterterrorism," it has become increasingly obvious that assaults on the indigenous culture, language, religion and population control have more to do with colonial ambition than curbing terrorism.

Clarke's compelling ride through the imperial past of the area, once known as East Turkestan, takes the reader through a history of warlords, emperors and rebellions. Two separate East Turkestan Muslim republics came and went followed by the "peaceful emancipation" of it all by the People's Liberation Army in 1949. The PLA heralded a tentative renaissance of "Minzu" (minority) autonomy, which has surfaced from time to time since then, but all pretense of self-determination has now vanished; replaced by President Xi Jinping's vision of a "New Era" for his country, fully sinicized and culturally uniform.

Large scale Han migration into the area, forcible "transformational" re-education policies that "resonate with the worst totalitarian precedents of the twentieth century" and pathologize Uyghur cultural identity and practice, provide clues as to the final settler-colonial intent, according to some of the authors. The CCP ultimate ambition is to appropriate the land and degrade or vanish the indigenous Turkic people altogether.

Exercised by the CCP's actions in Xinjiang, much of the anthology examines elements of human rights abuses in Xinjiang against the backdrop of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948) whereby intent to destroy in whole or part, a national, ethnically, racial or religious group can be established.
