Worst Atrocity in Bangladesh History: 10,000 military attack Islamics
by Kaukab Siddique, PhD

In our May 5 issue, New Trend happily noted the arrival of large numbers of Muslim protestors, PEACEFUL and UNARMED, who decided to sit down in Dhaka to protest attacks by police which left one person dead and hundreds injured.
Late at night, the combined forces of the secular regime including its "civilian" gangs, led by police and military forces, attacked the defenseless protestors who were quietly praying, doing zikr and resting, many even sleeping after the daylong rallies.
What followed is horrific beyond words. Blood flowed in the streets as the Muslims were indiscriminately slaughtered. Truck loads of the dead are being taken away by the regime's forces. As the crowd was resting next to Baitul Mukarram, the central mosque in Dhaka, the secular gangs tried to set fire to the entire mosque complex. Scores of book stores selling Islamic books, Qurans and Hadith were burned to ashes.

We publish here the joint statement of the top leaders of Hefajate Islam [Defense of Islam] which had brought the anti-blasphemy crowds into Dhaka.
We also have photographic evidence of the attack by the government with thanks to Dr. Kamal. Some of them are from earlier in the day when the police atrocities had just begun but were repelled, but most are from the night time attack.

Please protest to the Bangladesh embassy in your country. In Washington DC it is:

Islamic Leaders of Peaceful Movement Hefajate Islam Issue Joint Statement.

In a press statement, 15 high-ranking leaders of the city unit of the Chittagong-based hardline pro-Islamic organization condemned the attack and said it would be treated as the greatest massacre in history. They also claimed that armed cadres of Chhatra League and Juba League, the student and youth wings of the ruling Awami League were involved in the mayhem at the adjacent areas of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Sunday.

"The Hefazat proved it repeatedly that they believed in peace and not in vandalising and setting fire to public or private property," the statement said. "They (ruling partymen) plundered jewelry shops, set fire to book shops and holy Quran, damaged and torched vehicles with police assistance...But the pro-government media try to shift the responsibility on us," the statement added.

crowd was carried out when Hefazat leaders and activists were staying there peacefully; some were offering jikr, some prayer and some were just sleeping. "At this time, police, RAB and BGB launched their joint operation killing hundreds of people and injuring some 20,000 more creating a black chapter of the history," the statement added. The statement quoted witnesses as saying that bodies of the deceased were taken away by pickup vans, ambulance and trucks. "We have no language to express our condemnation and protest at the incident," the statement said adding that the government has to take the responsibility for it. Terming the incident "savage and shameful", the Hefazat leaders said none could save him or her in the past by carrying out repression or killing. The Hefazat leaders also expressed their concerns over the alleged police attacks on and killings at Quami madrasahs and Islamic institutions across the country. They urged the people to offer special prayer in mosques across the country for the departed souls and also for the early recovery of the injured.

The signatories to the statement included Maulana Noor Hossain Kashemi, Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami, Maulana Jonayed Al Habib, Maulana Abdur Rab Yusufi, Mufti Taiyab, Maulana Abul Hasnat Amini and Maulana Ahlullah Wasel
